The Kind of Accountability That Actually Works

"Why can't I just get up in the morning?!!??!"
It’s 5:30 and I just walked 2.5 blocks to get to my gym because everyone in the city chose my gym after work & parking is…not a thing.
Now I’m wandering around the gym avoiding eye contact, pretending I’m stretching, when really I’m just waiting for someone, anyone, to get off a treadmill.
Finally secured one.  Doing the math:  I’ll have exactly 1.75 hours (aka 2 episodes of Real Housewives of NYC) of relaxation before it’s time to get to bed like a responsible adult.
All so I can’t use “I’m tired” as my excuse to do a pre-work gym session & have to go through this torment of going after work.  Again.
Will it work this time?
Unclear.
I’ve tried everything.
A service that called me with motivational messages (“Dawn patrol!  Your bed’s plotting a mutiny”. 🙄).
Wearing gym clothes to bed.
Alarm clock on the other side of the room.
I could make it work for a few days here or there, but never consistently.
Until I moved in with my early-riser husband.
This guy wakes up excited.  No alarm.  Just pops up to check in on his buddy NASDAQ, read his Stoic wisdom & cook eggs, then head to his favorite part of the day, the workout.
Meanwhile, I’m begging Alexa to give me 5 more minutes.
Eventually, I slither out of the bed, mentally debating whether I hate today’s workout, and head downstairs – where I’m greeted by a half-screamed “GOOD MORNING!” and a dog aggressively offering me a tennis ball (I don’t fall for this, he’s not really “offering” it at all).
Here’s the thing:
I never asked Donnie to help hold me accountable.
And he never says a word about whether I go to the gym or not.
But I know he’ll know.
And for some reason…that matters.
That’s the version of accountability we don’t talk about enough.
It’s not always loud or guilt-driven.
It can be subtle.  It can be positive.  And it can be as simple as knowing someone will see you follow through.
And that can be enough to change your behavior.
The same thing shows up when you’re trying to answer bigger questions like:
“What kind of work would I really enjoy?”
It’s easy to keep putting that off.  But it’s also really easy to move forward when someone is walking alongside you, expecting you to take the next step.
If that’s been sitting in the back of your mind for a while, consider this your nudge.
