Quitters Never Qwin...

“Quitters never qwin… I mean, witters never wi….wait.” She took a deep breath while silently cursing herself for trying to motivate this group of bratty high school girls.

“WINNERS NEVER QUIT AND QUITTERS NEVER WIN!” she triumphantly yelled while making a forceful hand chopping motion.

We all sat watching our new, fresh out of college Volleyball coach as she worked to impart her vast 22-year old wisdom onto us. Apparently, she had been made aware of our win-loss record from the previous year & was excited by the challenge thrown in front of her.

And it worked! Not a single one of us quit the team that year.

In hindsight, perhaps her goal was a bit loftier.

We’ve all heard this phrase multiple times & I agree that there is value in sticking with something even when it’s a challenge. Perseverance is a good thing.

I can say from personal experience that it’s worked out pretty well when I’ve managed to keep my butt in my seat while all my body wants to do is smash my laptop on the table like I’m Eddie Van Halen in Hot for Teacher.

But how often do we think of the other side of this quitting coin? What if there are benefits to leaving things behind that may no longer suit you & begin searching for something that does?

Did you know?

· Ken Jeong (Knocked Up, The Hangover) left his career as a doctor to become a stand-up comedian & actor.

· Ina Garten (Barefoot Contessa) wrote nuclear energy policy for the U.S. government before quitting to open up a specialty food store.

· Jeff Bezos (Amazon) had a successful job in Wall Street before leaving to start a little online bookstore.

I’m guessing that none of these people wished they had just “persevered” in their previous life.

I don’t believe that this means you need to quit your job. But I do believe that this means you should quit just forcing yourself to be happy & tolerating situations that may no longer be bringing you joy.

Let’s figure out what could make you feel as good as taking a giant bite of a chocolate cream donut & explore options for how you could make that happen - either in your current role or with a shift. The world of possibilities is out there. Wouldn’t you like to at least take a peek?
