“Fine, I’ll just do it myself”, I said after having asked my Mom once again to sew more outfits for my Barbie dolls.
I was a lucky kid. Mom had provided my sister & me with a Barbie-sized closetful of wardrobe choices. Even the Ken dolls had a few super-cool 70’s-style one-piece leisure suits (all Velcro attachments because maybe that had been recently discovered or something?) My Barbies needed a deep wardrobe selection because they were in a Blondie/Patridge Family/Shaun Cassidy cover band.
While ambitious, they were also a bit relaxed as they often lounged on the blow-up furniture during performances, but man, they were dressed well. When their manager decided to add Donny & Marie to their repertoire, it was time for a glow-up.
I sat myself down in front of the sewing machine with a piece of fabric & a pair of scissors. I was SO ready to drape our favorite Barbie, Carol, in a flowy evening gown for her rendition of Marie’s Weeping Willow.
Who knew? Perhaps I was about to become the next Halston designing the slinky dresses I drooled over in Fall/Winter catalogue from JCPenney.
I wrapped the fabric around Carol’s naked body in multiple ways. For some reason I wasn’t immediately channeling the design concepts but I figured it would come to me if I just kept trying different angles & got it wrapped it around her the right way.
Huh.
Turned out, maybe this wasn’t the no-brainer I thought it would be.
While I’d love to finish this story by saying I asked for help & learned that there is an actual process that can be followed for sewing mini-sized 70’s cover band costumes, I can’t. I didn’t know where to start, didn’t bother to get help & walked away from the dream.
Maybe you’ve found yourself in a similar situation when it comes to your career. Finding something you’d love to do sounds great. But when you sit down in front of that sewing machine to really figure it out, the process doesn’t just magically appear. And the trial & error required to get there doesn’t feel worth the effort. So you let it go.
Your advantage over my stubborn, younger self is that you know that help is available. I’ve got a process already designed that will get you from clueless to savvy as you take this journey to figure out what lights you up. Interested to hear how that can happen? P. S. The band? Catch their “Behind the Music” bootleg. Legendary.
